Boatswain's Pipe
The boatswain's pipe is one of the oldest and most distinctive pieces of nautical equipment. Also known as a bosun's whistle or flute, it was used in ancient Greece and Rome to keep the stroke pace of galley slaves on their boats. During the Crusades, the English used this pipe to call cross-bowmen on deck for attack. It later was used to signal various happenings on board, since its shrill tune could be heard above most other activity. This signaling device was so essential to the well-being of the ship, it became a badge of honor on British and American vessels. Ours is made of brass and comes with a muslin bag.
