Used by farmers, travelers and militiamen, wooden canteens were made by local coopers in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Ours is based on a field canteen, circa 1750-1789, in the Colonial Williamsburg collections. Completely handmade of pine by Ohio cooper Robert Wulff, it hangs from woven cotton strap and comes complete with a wooden plug. When filled with water, it swells to become completely watertight.
