The Story of WILLIAMSBURG
Williamsburg. The capital of the Virginia colony in the 1700s was also a bustling center for political outspokenness and cultural development. Drawing from the sophisticated beauty of English design and oriental flair, colonists of Virginia not only fought for freedom but expanded their desire for freedom and individuality into craftsmanship and design to create the foundations of style — in furniture, ceramics, metals and more — that would become known as American style.
Today, our WILLIAMSBURG Products Program continues the tradition of both interpreting and furthering American style. WILLIAMSBURG is a fresh fusion of today’s lifestyle with the beautiful decorative traditions of 18th-century America. It is a brand of the Products Division of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that oversees the restored colonial capital in Williamsburg, Virginia. The Story of the Pineapple
Hospitality—being gracious and generous to one’s guests. It’s the essence of our customer service philosophy. It’s also the meaning behind the pineapple.
Pineapples have been a symbol of hospitality and welcome for centuries. They were first discovered in South America during the Age of Exploration. Sailors were fascinated with their unique appearance and flavor—much more exotic than the European apples and pears to which they were accustomed. It wasn’t long before the New World colonies began clamoring for this rare import. But they weren’t just your everyday side dish. The pineapple was extremely expensive—so expensive that in Williamsburg, only the wealthiest hostesses could afford them (the middle class resorted to renting a pineapple to display during special occasions, then returning it to the store for a wealthier patron to purchase and consume).
So, imagine arriving at a party in the 18th century to find a pineapple on the dining room table. You would realize that your hostess had gone to great expense to secure the very best for her guests. What a treat—what a welcome. Though the price and availability of the pineapple have changed over time, their meaning has not. The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation operates the world’s largest living history museum in Williamsburg, Virginia—the restored 18th-century capital of Britain’s largest, wealthiest, and most populous outpost of empire in the New World. Here we interpret the origins of the idea of America, conceived decades before the American Revolution. The Colonial Williamsburg story, “Becoming Americans,” tells how diverse peoples, having different and sometimes conflicting ambitions, evolved into a society that valued liberty and equality. Americans cherish these values as a birthright, even when their promise remains unfulfilled.
In Colonial Williamsburg’s 301-acre Historic Area stand hundreds of restored, reconstructed, and historically furnished buildings. Our Revolutionary Return Policy
Thank you for supporting The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. We trust that your purchase meets your expectations, however, if for any reason it does not; we are happy to return/exchange (less shipping charges) any non-furniture merchandise within 90 days from date of purchase. All merchandise must be unused, undamaged, and in original packaging, with an accompanying receipt. Refunds will be issued in like manner of purchase. Cash refunds will be issued by check no sooner than 10 banking days from the date of purchase. If you are unable to provide a receipt, we will issue a one-time exchange for merchandise at the lowest sales price.
